“Something’s Gotta Give”

Coming September 13th, 2023

“Something’s Gotta Give” might not be the obvious choice for a lead single. The delicate vocals don’t reflect Mack’s reputation as a powerhouse singer. The genre trends more towards indie folk and strays from her usual neo-soul comfort zone. However, the timeless production and catchy melodies make the song a standout. Mack’s songwriting shines in this meditative tune with conversational lyrics that refuse to accept stagnation for the sake of being comfortable. Staying true both to her artistry and her curious spirit, it’s fitting that Mack ushers in this new era with a song about change.

Raised in Wisconsin, Moira Mack has spent the last several years working as a vocalist and songwriter in Los Angeles. She has toured with Wyclef Jean of the Fugees, shared bills with James Blake, Ellie Goulding and Cory Henry, and graced iconic stages such as the Troubadour and the El Rey. She has garnered millions of streams and tens of thousands of monthly listeners with her collaborations. This fall she is finally ready to let the world inside her head, her heart, and her most emotionally traumatic experiences—YIKES—with the release of her first solo singles. Expect to hear a genre-defying spread of songs that reflect her many influences—Elliot Smith, Bon Iver, Stevie Wonder, Etta James, et al.—and cover everything from mental health and family, to career and relationships.

The original title of this song was “Nine Years.” Nine years I had been in Los Angeles and I was feeling overwhelmingly stuck. I wasn’t unhappy but I was unfulfilled. I found clarity as I watched several people close to me realize that they had outgrown their relationships. We were having extensive conversations about what it meant to compromise versus settle. Sometimes the most difficult thing is walking away from something that still holds goodness, that still holds hope and potential, but at the end of the day change happens with or without you. This song is about not only embracing change, but demanding it. It seemed an appropriate place to start after nine years of hoarding music on my hard drive. Here goes nothin’.
